Leadership – A Masterpiece Puzzle

Dr. PamelaLeadership

Happy #NationalPuzzleDay to all the puzzle enthusiasts out there! Whether it’s the challenge of assembling 1000+ piece puzzles, solving crosswords, or engaging in word searches, today is a celebration of all things puzzling! I still treasure that 2000-piece puzzle masterpiece, forever preserved in a frame with a touch of puzzle glue – and who could forget the convenience of roll-up rugs for keeping a puzzle in play. We’ve all faced puzzles that stumped us, maybe even prompting a gracious surrender. On the flip side, the triumphant feeling of completing a puzzle, the satisfying click of that last piece, is enough to inspire a happy dance and a rendition of BTS’ Dynamite and Stay Gold songs.

Now, setting aside my full-on nerd persona, let’s delve into why I’ve chosen National Puzzle Day to discuss #leadership in this blog. As an executive training enthusiast, I find intriguing parallels between the strategic thinking and problem-solving skills honed in puzzle-solving and the qualities essential for effective leadership.

Navigating the realm of leadership can often feel like solving a puzzle. The intricate process of leadership, akin to a complex jigsaw, involves various pieces that can either pose challenges or spark innovation. The analogy to National Puzzle Day is not simply timely; it mirrors the nuanced construction of leadership skills and development.

  • Framing Your Leadership Development: Every puzzle begins with edge and corner pieces, providing a structured boundary for the puzzle’s completion. Similarly, framing your leadership development establishes a scaffolding that defines dimensions, proportions, and color schemes. This framework serves as a support structure, enabling focus and direction throughout your leadership journey.
  • Identifying and Matching Your Leadership Development Needs: Internal puzzle pieces are distinguished and grouped based on colors, patterns, and unique characteristics. This process mirrors the identification and matching of leadership development needs. Grouping skills and strategies facilitate a systematic approach to addressing areas for improvement, leveraging existing strengths, and identifying opportunities for training and education.
  • Combining Leadership Development Skills, Education, and Training: With the puzzle framed and groupings established, the integration of skills, education, and training becomes achievable. Each completed course contributes to a linked chain of experiences and knowledge. This systematic approach propels your leadership development journey toward a comprehensive understanding of the full picture.
  • Leadership Development Clicking into Place: As the framework and linked groups take shape, the final puzzle piece clicks into place, symbolizing the outcome of planned training and education. While leadership development is an ongoing process, this moment signifies the completion of one phase, offering a tangible representation of achievement and understanding.

It’s crucial to recognize that, akin to puzzles, leadership development entails unique challenges and opportunities. Trial and error, akin to attempting puzzle pieces that may initially seem to fit, underlines the iterative nature of leadership development. The ‘aha moment’ in understanding a leadership concept mirrors the satisfying click of the right puzzle piece falling into place.

Acknowledging the complexity of certain puzzles and deciding to revisit them later is not a failure but a strategic shift. Just as puzzles come with a pre-defined outcome, your #leadershipdevelopment journey manifests as the leader you envision becoming.
